Automating and Accelerating Clinical Trials
Tue, Sep 15 | 12:05 PM – 12:15 PM
Ryan Yu Head of Scientific Computing Technology — Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Mark Penniston CEO — Atorus Research Inc.
Abstract
Legacy reporting workflows in clinical development rely on static outputs, manual refresh cycles, and siloed tools that slow decision-making across safety, efficacy, and biomarker analytics. As biopharma organizations seek faster, more flexible access to clinical data, the question is no longer whether interactive analytics can work in regulated environments — but whether the economics justify enterprise adoption.
This presentation shares a value engineering framework developed through a multi-year partnership between Regeneron and Atorus Research to deploy a production-grade suite of interactive Shiny applications across Regeneron’s clinical portfolio. The framework quantifies costs and returns across five dimensions: development efficiency, review cycle compression, infrastructure consolidation, regulatory readiness, and organizational capability building.
Attendees will learn how Regeneron is on track to save upwards of $40M by transitioning legacy workflows to modern, open-source clinical analytics infrastructure — and the specific conditions, design decisions, and organizational choices that made that scale of return achievable.
Key findings include how programmer hours per deliverable were reduced, how faster signal detection during ongoing studies changed the economics of safety and efficacy review, and how a validated hosting environment enabled GxP-compliant deployment without slowing delivery.
The presentation closes with a look at what’s next: how Regeneron and Atorus are extending this foundation toward real-time trial monitoring, deeper integration across the R&D data ecosystem, and the emerging role of agentic workflows in clinical analytics. Designed for clinical operations leaders, R&D technology strategists, and biostatistics executives, this session offers a practical, reproducible methodology for building the business case to move beyond static TLF pipelines — and a roadmap for what modern clinical analytics can become.
